Binge Eating Disorder
Binge Eating Disorder is characterized by recurrent binge eating without the regular use of compensatory measures to counter the binge. Below I list some of the signs and symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder. You don’t have to exhibit all of these behaviors to have Binge Eating Disorder. Additionally, you may have experiences or behaviors that are not listed here.
- Binge (eating large amounts in a short period of time) on food, typically in secret
- Feel frenzied or numb during binges: you don’t taste the food and you feel unable to stop
- Feel ashamed about the binges
- Don’t compensate for binges by purging, fasting, or overexercising
- Eat mostly “safe” foods outside of the binges
- Choose bingeing over work or social life
- Spend more time alone
- Spend significant time thinking about food and planning binges
- Spend significant amounts of money on binge food
- Be in a bigger body
- Wake up most days thinking, “Today is the day I don’t binge.”
“Food is not the enemy. Self-hate is.”
